The phrase “3D printed monkey selfie” would have made no sense thirty years ago and even makes little sense today, but, with a bit of context we can decipher this 21st century lingo to reveal a series of events that could have only taken place in the absurd period of time in which we currently live.
In 2011, British photographer David Slater traveled to Indonesia to snap a perfect photo of the crested black macaque, when a female macaque snatched his SLR and went running off into the jungle. Upon recovering the camera, Slater noticed that the monkey had taken, among the blurry shots of the forest floor and canopy, some perfectly crisp self-portraits. The photos subsequently made Slater famous and, when the blog TechDirt published a post asking who owned the copyright to the photo, Slater or the macaque, Slater’s representative, Caters News, filed a take-down request, claiming that the blog was violating the photographer’s copyright on the photo. While Slater continued to fight for his right to royalties, any memory of the monkey or the copyright battle faded from the collective consciousness.…
