By Michael Molitch-Hou

Crowdfunding campaigns are most often used as a pre-order system for funding the completion and manufacturing of hardware projects. As exciting as this model might be for the future of investing and business, the real stories are in the people running the campaigns, particularly when a crowdfunding campaign is an attempt at connection between the project’s founders and its potential backers. Just as a Romanian truck modeler reached out to the Internet to fund his daily living and medications, a couple based out of Texas has turned to the world of Indiegogo in an attempt to continue funding their dream of producing a ~$4,000 SLS 3D printer called the PowderKeg.…

Politically-minded 3D artist Fernando Sosa has made yet another popular 3D printed butt plug. Once again, the plug is not popular for its possible uses, but, instead for its satirical nature. This time, his target is human garbage can and Republican candidate for the world’s most obnoxious wealthy bankrupt television personality Donald Trump.

Trump has said countless stupid and terrible things, but among the most recent, he made the racist claim that Mexican immigrants are criminals, drug addicts, and rapists.
When Mexico (meaning the Mexican Government) sends its people, they’re not sending their best.…

Based out of Warsaw, Polish design firm UAU Project has been making a splash on French 3D printing repository Cults, where their Cork Pals are among the cutest printables I’ve seen so far.  Using 3D printed heads and tails, anyone can transform an unneeded wine cork into a fun animal toy.  UAU has taken this approach, of combining 3D prints with traditionally-made items, to form functional objects with their latest project dubbed SMF, or Self Made Furniture.

So far, UAU has only released one SMF item, but it’s a nice one to launch the collection.…

Microsoft’s augmented reality device, the HoloLens, has yet to be released, but companies already keen to take advantage of the wearable computer’s unique ability to overlay virtual software environments over the physical world.  One company, called Object Theory, in particular is hoping to help the rest do so ahead of the launch.

Object Theory is new.  In fact, they’re so new that they were just founded less than ten days ago, but the team may have the experience to bring HoloLens applications to life, as the founders consist of Michael Hoffman, a former member of the HoloLens Studios team that worked on NASA’s own HoloLens projects, and Raven Zachary, a former Los Alamos National Lab employee who has also designed iPhone apps for such high profile clients as the ’08 Obama Campaign, Starbucks, Zipcar, Whole Foods Market, and Amazon.…

We’ve received a lot of flack for our coverage of stories related to symbols of political figures recently.  We pride ourselves on allowing our writers to take a subjective approach to their articles, even expressing their political beliefs, but apologize for anyone that might get offended. So, for this week’s free 3D printable model, we have the Earth, something that, based on the very fact that we must all live here together until SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, or some other commercial endeavor started by hip billionaires allows us to colonize Mars.…

House printing may still be a young industry, but Chinese companies are hoping to mature it really quickly.  First, WinSun implemented the designs of USC’s Behrokh Khoshnevis to construct 10 houses in 24 hours, followed by a villa and an apartment complex, and are planning to 3D print an office building in Dubai.  Now, ZhuoDa Group has constructed their own two-story villa in just three hours.

On July 17, the Chinese company unveiled their modular home at the International Exhibition Center Plaza in Weihai. …

Today, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum has launched its first-ever Kickstarter campaign, titled Reboot the Suit, to preserve human history with 3D scanning and more.  Asking for $500,000, the museum has already raised more than a fifth of its goal to conserve the iconic spacesuit that Neil Armstrong wore when he became the first person to set foot on the Earth’s moon.

As it stands, the 21-layer spacesuit is among the museum’s most fragile artifacts, stored in a climate controlled storage area where, despite every measure to protect it, the suit’s material has slowly begun to decay and its colors fade. …

If physics is a printer management software and the Universe is the printer, you might say that creation itself is the act of 3D printing.  Would that make DNA the gCode with which organisms are created? Perhaps the analogy is a messy one, but the ability to configure DNA into 3D structures could yield fantastic results in the fields of medicine, bioengineering, electronics and more.  In a study published in Nature, Björn Högberg and his team outline significant progress in the technique of DNA origami that has sees them able to automatically create 3D structures from DNA.…
