Japanese 3D printing marketplace Rinkak has quickly been growing in stature, as it launches a variety of innovative products and services.  The latest news should firmly establish the company behind Rinkak, Kabuku Inc., as a major player in the industry.  Today, Kabuku announced that it would be providing the 3D printed, mass customized parts for Toyota’s i-Road Personal Mobility Vehicle.

Previously covered on 3DPI, the i-Road is a cloud-connected, one-person vehicle for inner city driving currently in a pilot phase taking place over the course of the next year in Tokyo. …

Though Local Motors has been in the business of selling crowd sourced vehicles for eight years, the firm’s large-scale car printing has made it a truly 21st century car company.  And, this year, Local Motors is shifting gears from pure prototyping and marketing of their Direct Digital Manufacturing (DDM) platform to the actual manufacturing of cars.  The company has plans to open two new car printing facilities in 2015, where they will be able to DDM custom cars for customers. To kick off this new car printing era, however, Local Motors required an all-new crowdsourced design with which to start from, leading them to launch Project Redacted. …

The BBC has recently been working to get UK students more engaged with science and engineering, launching a new series of programming with a tech focus and, today, a small computer to teach kids how to code.  Even simpler than a Raspberry Pi computer or Arduino microcontroller, the BBC micro:bit will be given away to every 11 or 12 year old child in year 7 or equivalent across the UK, with up to 1 million micro:bits donated in total.  Partnering with the BBC are 29 different organizations, including the UK’s own MyMiniFactory.…

Despite the bursting of the recent 3D printing hype bubble, the industry is still going strong and, as Gartner’s Hype Cycle indicates, we’re currently shifting into true development mode, where the technology will improve to meet, and likely succeed, the level of hype promoted by media outlets and the like.  So, though we didn’t see any 3D printed aircraft last year, we did see significant progress towards the 3D printing of aircraft parts when GE opened up a facility in Alabama to mass manufacturer its 3D printed jet engine nozzles. …

Last year, a hopeful start-up emerged on the 3D printing scene, boasting former employees from Google and 3D Systems as a part of their team.  Source3 had been quiet since November 2014, so we had yet to see exactly how its founders, which had previously launched the successful RightsFlow music licensing platform, which was ultimately acquired by Google, would be bringing their experience to 3D printing.  Today, at Comic-Con, the company made its first big move, releasing a product that I’m sure many video game fans will be excited about: a 3D printed version of the cover art for Capcom’s Steet Fighter V, to be released in March, 2016.…

California-based Vitaly Bulgarov has typically lent his amazing 3D modeling and design skills to such big name companies as Blizzard Entertainment, Oakley, LucasFilm’s Industrial Light & Magic, and Intuitive Surgical.  Or he provides his expertise to INTEL, where he currently works on concepts for the next generation of wearable tech.  But, in his spare time, Bulgarov works on his own “Black Phoenix Project”, concept based on the idea of a fictional robotics corporation from the not too distant future.  And, recently, he had the opportunity to bring those designs to life with the help of new 3D printing studio Factor 31.…

As we’ve seen from the Disney Research group, the company that birthed Mickey Mouse and long lines for overpriced popcorn is really into 3D printing.  The group has put out a lot of exciting work on new ways to 3D print objects, including the elusive process of fabric 3D printing.  It should come as no surprise then that the second Disney Accelerator should feature two 3D printing startups.

From now until the program’s Demo Day on October, 6, 2015, ten firms will work to develop their businesses with help from a three-month mentorship and investment program. …

At the end of last year, the Smithsonian Institute added 45th President of the United States, Barack Obama, to its digital collection. The institute, however, has yet to make the bust available to the public, leading one person to even launch a Change.org campaign to see the files publicly available.  Until that happens, Sketchfab’s talented Louis Bidou has found a convenient work around the Smithsonian’s secret stash.

See, when the President’s bust was scanned and printed, the Smithsonian put out the above fun, and widely shared, video of Pres.…

Before going on to create the look for one of the most groundbreaking desktop 3D printers to be released this year, the Voxel8 electronics printer, Juan Carlos Noguera first designed the Nuke, a 3D printable, electric ukelele. As the culmination of his studies at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Nuke is an exercise in streamlined design specifically for desktop manufacturing, a functional object that can be made by even the most inexperienced Makers with access to relatively small printers.…

At the beginning of this year, the law firm Robbins, Geller, and Rubin had filed a suit against Stratasys claiming that the company had “made materially false and misleading statements…[to] artificially inflate the price of Stratasys stock.”  As the case continues, the law firm has filed a whopping 125-page document that lays out their entire case, including, among other things, the claim that Stratasys sold their MakerBot 5th Generation Replicators with full knowledge that the 3D printer’s Smart Extruders were faulty.…

While Meckler Media’s Inside 3D Printing event series have been successful since their inception nearly two years ago, the man behind Meckler Media, Alan Meckler, had also seen the need for a mutual fund devoted to 3D printing technologies, leading him to launch the 3D Printing and Technology Fund (TDPIX, TDPNX) with his son, John Meckler.  And, just as Inside 3D Printing grew incorporate robotics into its shows, already seeing one iteration in South Korea and looking forward to another in Tokyo this October, so too has the mutual fund added robotics to the mix, as, today, the fund has announced the change of its name to the 3D Printing, Robotics and Technology Fund.…

Launching on Kickstarter tomorrow, the GyroPalm is a wearable that probably should have existed by now. Or, rather, it takes those devices that do exist, like the Apple Watch, and makes them open source, as the GyroPalm is an open source wearable meant to allow the user to control everything in your Internet of Things, including smartphones and robotics, with the flick of a wrist.

Built with an array of electronics, including infrared and inertial measurement sensors, the GyroPalm has a low-latency reach of 3,000 feet using encrypted protocol 2.4GHz. …

3D Systems Releases Its Own Soluble Filament for Complex, Moving 3D Prints

Other 3D printer manufacturers have been promoting the use of water soluble filament for their machines for some time, but, because 3D Systems’ Cube 3 and CubePro rely on filament cartridge systems, the use of such filament, for printing support structures to create more complex prints, is not as easy as inserting a third-party material and printing.  Fortunately for Cube owners, 3D Systems has just released their Infinity Rinse-Away water-soluble support material.

The Infinity Rinse-Away material, available at $49 for the Cube and $99 for the CubePro, is meant to dissolve quickly and cleanly with nothing other than ordinary water.…

Drone Maker ElecFreaks Launches Portable Freaks3D 3D Printer

It may not be the “world’s first portable 3D printer”, as the Indiegogo campaign claims, but Freaks3D’s portable 3D printer is a well-marketed one with a reasonable price. Developed by ElecFreaks, the startup behind the 3D printable ELF drone, the Freaks3D printer is definitely worth checking out.

The first feature one might notice about the Freaks3D printer, aside from its portability, is how that portability is achieved, with a cute, interchangeable 3D printed handle. From a practical standpoint, this is pretty useless, but it will definitely capture the attention someone wanting to craft their identity with their personal fabricator.…
