Oxford Performance Materials was the first company to receive FDA approval for a polymer implant for their unique skull implants.  While the company’s biocompatible materials have been deemed safe for implantation, their previous implants, including the aforementioned cranial implant and the OsteoFab Patient-Specific Facial Device, were not load-bearing, limiting the use of their technology and materials to a small region of the body.  Today, however, all of that has changed, as the company receives FDA clearance for its SpineFab® VBR implant system, now the first and only 3D printed polymer load-bearing device.…

3D Systems knows a good business when it sees it.  In the past, it might have flat-out acquired it, but acquisitions may not make the best financial sense at the moment.  So, 3D Systems has entered into a commercial agreement with ZVerse, a company that has been gaining a lot of traction with the ability to convert 2D images into 3D printable objects using their own LAYR software and 3D Systems’ full-color ProJet systems.
ZVerse has steadily gained ground with its sports memorabilia business, earning more than $1 million in revenues, eventually gaining the eye of Source3, whose founders have previously worked for Google and 3D Systems. …

Two months back, we reported on a deal between Stratasys subsidiary Solidscape and Kangshuo Group Co. Ltd to create the largest 3D printing service bureau in China.  Today, that agreement has come to fruition with the partners opening up an 80,000 square-foot multi-story facility in Foshan City, Guangdong Province equipped with 100 Solidscape 3D printers.   And, according to Stratasys, this is only the beginning.

The new facility, which also includes a 21,000 square foot assembly factory for building Solidscape printers, is just the first in a wide-reaching deal that will see the creation of 100 “Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centers” across the country, equipped with Solidscape machines.…

This year, one startup shook the industry with the potential to push 3D printing to the next level and it wasn’t Carbon3D. Though Carbon3D’s ultra-fast CLIP technology has huge implications for the potential of 3D printing, it can only satiate the desire for speed and instant gratification. Still, CLIP will be, at least as it was presented to the public, a method for producing parts. Voxel8, however, is working towards the ability to produce, not parts, but completely functional objects with their Developer’s Kit, a unique desktop platform for 3D printing electronics and other multi-material objects.…

There has been at least one attempt to launch an Etsy-style site focused on DIY and Maker goods, but it has yet to materialize to the extent that Etsy has.  Another contender has stepped up to the plate and, though it is still in its inception, could prove to be a possible go-to site to sell Maker-wares and DIY products.

Doyourshelf.com is a Barcelona-based site where anyone in Europe can open up a shop and begin selling goods.  At the moment, these goods consist of only a handful of shops. …

The US Primaries are coming up, which means that all of the candidates are under the spotlight. Though there’s already a 3D printable version of the current Commander in Chief, we’re still waiting for the entire roster of possible future presidents to be available in printable form.  One startup previously covered on 3DPI, however, has uploaded a printable Hillary Clinton, one of only a few running for the Democratic Party.  Created by design firm FCTRY, this action figure was originally part of a successful Kickstarter campaign launched in support of the candidate, though I should note that I am not endorsing her run by posting this model.…

3D Printed MOOD Glasses Provide Trippy Visuals without the Trip

Hungarian artist Bence Agoston’s MOOD specs probably won’t help you trip so hard you see the ultimate nature of the Universe, but they will replicate some of the visuals you might experience while on hallucinogens. Post on the artist’s Behance site, these 3D printed frames are paired with a set of six different kaleidoscopic lens that, when rotated, create a number of fun patterns, based on the Moiré effect.

The artist describes his red, green, and blue filters in this way, “Because each color filters the incoming lights differently, and the patterns can overlap each other or leave blank fields, the new view is completely random and twisted.”

The artist makes no direct reference to LSD, but he does say that the ideal time to use them might be while listening to psychedelic music, “The ideal situation for use is during travel, when people listen to music, just looking out the window and watching the ever-changing sights, in perfect harmony with the music.…

Founded earlier this year by January 2015 by “bright Russian entrepreneur George I Fomitchev and the brilliant electrical engineer, NASA contractor Matteo Borri”, Endurance is in the business of “business robots, lasers, and telepresence rigs.” With such disparate interests, the company is clearly capable of lateral thinking and devising new applications for their technology.  An example of such is the L-Cheapo laser, which can be outfitted onto just about any CNC or FFF 3D printer to turn it into a laser cutting machine.…

There are a number of 3D printing facilities across the US, including Stratasys’ Direct Manufacturing and GE’s Alabama plant, dedicated to their 3D printed LEAP fuel nozzles. Apparently, however, Norway’s Norsk Titanium AS (NTi) doesn’t believe that any of these are quite industrial-grade.  To push 3D printing into a mainstream manufacturing tech, the titanium 3D printing company plans to open a 200,000-square-foot plant that they deem the “world’s first industrial-scale 3D printing facility”.

Norsk will be opening the government-owned facility in an unnamed state as a part of a public-private partnership aiming to 3D print large-scale aircraft components relying on NTi’s patented Direct Metal Deposition technology.…

“Did you know,” Platt Boyd asks me, “that the way we construct buildings hasn’t really changed for 10,000 years? The oldest extant structures are about 10,000 years old and those are post and beam. And we’ve been doing it that way for a long, long time, with some deviation, but not a lot. But they don’t really translate how structures are formed in the natural world.”
I met Platt last year when I attended a pitch contest called Demo Day, hosted by tech incubator GIGTANK, in Chattanooga, Tennessee.…

In 2013, the lab of Prof. Joshua Pearce at Michigan Tech had designed an open source metal 3D printer that could be assembled for less than $2,000.  The lab is still working hard on their technology and, today, published a breakthrough that could be applicable to metal 3D printing as a whole and, more importantly, reduces the cost of metal 3D printing with their system even further.
Typically, metal 3D printing requires the use of a metal substrate, onto which the part is fabricated. …

3D portraiture is one of the most immediately consumer-ready 3D printing products available, but it’s been slow to catch on with big name businesses, though Disney/Marvel has been testing out 3D printed figurines customized to look like super heroes and Star Wars characters.  Panasonic in Japan, however, is now jumping on board, launching its first 3D portrait booth.

At the Panasonic Center in Osaka, the tech giant has opened up a massive 3D scanning room for creating 3D portraits. To pull it off, the company installed 120 LUMIX GH4 cameras, which sell at a whopping $1,200+ a pop. …

As 3D printing hype was boosting industry stocks to obscene levels last year, among those cited as potentially worthy investments by analysts was German rapid prototyping company Alphaform AG.  In fact, it is one of only a handful of 3D printing stocks that one can invest in.  Unfortunately, it seems as though the post-hype bubble market has had a negative effect on the Germany firm as Alphaform has begun bankruptcy proceedings on the grounds of impending insolvency.

Alphaform was established in 1996 near Munich, where the company performs rapid prototyping and 3D printing services, including series production.…
